Airlines at Terminal 8
Terminal 8 is where American Airlines and its partners concentrate: 14 carriers check in here, the third-largest check-in list at JFK behind Terminals 1 and 4. British Airways moved in from Terminal 7 in 2022, when the expanded terminal opened, putting the two transatlantic partners under one roof. The full list:
- Alaska Airlines
- American Airlines
- British Airways
- Cathay Pacific (committed to Terminal 6)
- China Southern
- Finnair
- GOL Linhas Aéreas
- Hawaiian Airlines
- Iberia
- Japan Airlines
- LEVEL
- Qantas
- Qatar Airways (committed to the New Terminal One)
- Royal Jordanian
The two notes above are the moving parts, and they point in opposite directions. Cathay Pacific is on Terminal 6's own airline partner list and has not moved, whatever a travel site may say. Qatar Airways is on the New Terminal One's list instead, which is a move to the other side of the airport once that building opens. Both still check in here today, and both are exactly the kind of allocation that changes mid-rebuild, so confirm against your booking. The American at JFK guide covers the anchor airline in depth, and the airline terminal guide covers every carrier at the airport.
Getting to Terminal 8
By public transport, ride the AirTrain, which stops at Terminal 8 on the airport loop, the last terminal stop coming from Federal Circle. It is free between terminals, terminal to terminal in under 10 minutes with trains every 5 to 15; the fare is $8.75 and applies only when you enter or exit at Jamaica Station or Howard Beach Station. One extra option unique to this side of the loop: the Q3 city bus stops at Terminal 8, per the airport's own route map and the MTA's stop data.
From Manhattan, the usual route is the subway to Jamaica or Howard Beach and the AirTrain from there, $11.75 all in, or the Long Island Rail Road from Jamaica for a faster leg at $5.25 to $7.25 with a CityTicket. Every route is compared on the guide to getting into Manhattan.
By car, the airport's guidance as of September 2026 is the JFK Expressway for direct access to Terminals 5, 7, and 8, with the Van Wyck Expressway serving Terminals 1 and 4; follow the posted signs over your GPS, because the rebuild keeps re-cutting the approaches. Ride app pickup runs from the arrivals curb here per Uber's own Terminal 8 page, and the airport's standing relocation advisory names only Terminals 5 and 7, not this one; check the app on the day anyway. Taxis use the marked line outside arrivals, and the free wait lots for meeting drivers are covered on the address and directions guide.
Parking at Terminal 8
Terminal 8's garage is the Red Lot, and it is the cheapest of the three terminal garages: $4 a half hour, rising to $8 a half hour once a stay passes three hours, up to a 24-hour maximum of $74, against $89 at Terminal 5's Yellow Lot and $94 at Terminal 4's Blue Lot. Booking at least three hours ahead brings the day to as low as $62, with prebooked entry allowed up to two hours early.
Expect company: with the Terminal 1 Green Lot closed under the rebuild, the airport's own parking page recommends the Red Lot for Terminal 1's drivers too. Height limits are 8 feet 2 inches on level A and 7 feet 6 inches on the levels above. The honest comparison stays the same as everywhere at JFK: the Long-Term Parking Lot near Lefferts Boulevard runs $55 at the gate and from $39 prebooked, one free AirTrain ride away. Every rate and rule is on the JFK parking guide.
Gates, walk times and facilities
Terminal 8's gates run 1 to 47 in four blocks, and the terminal publishes its own walk times from security: 2 to 5 minutes to gates 1 to 10, 2 to 4 to gates 12 to 20, 6 to 12 to gates 31 to 41, and 6 to 8 minutes to gates 42 to 47. The 31 to 41 block is the long haul of the building; the Terminal 8 map guide lays it out block by block with the landmarks.
The terminal was expanded in 2022 with five extra wide-body gates, which is what made room for British Airways to move in from Terminal 7. It now runs 60 or more shops and restaurants, with mobile ordering from your phone for pickup at the counter. The Show, a large-format LED wall with live performances and streamed sports, sits in the middle of the retail stretch.
The airport's own Terminal 8 page lists currency exchange among the services, and Priority Pass's JFK directory places two more useful stops here: Minute Suites nap rooms, open 24 hours, and the Gameway video game lounge, open 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Animal relief areas sit outside the terminal near baggage claim and off Doorway F at the ticket counters, per American's directions. For wheelchair or other assistance, arrange it in advance with your airline or through a travel agent, which is the airport's own instruction for this terminal.
Food and drink
The concessions rebuild has made Terminal 8 a genuinely good place to be hungry: the 2024 wave brought Peach Palace by Momofuku and Eataly, both first US airport locations per the Port Authority, alongside Shake Shack, Black Tap, and Zaro's, and the 2025 wave added The Boroughs Food Hall and Bowery Meat Company. Openings still roll, so what is pouring on a given day belongs to the live map rather than a list. What is here, where it sits, and what is worth the walk is on the Terminal 8 food guide.
Lounges
Four lounges operate here, all airside and all open from 4:15 AM daily: the Admirals Club on Concourse C across from Gate 42, and the three American and British Airways joint lounges, Greenwich above Gate 12 and Soho and Chelsea above Gate 14, with Chelsea the top tier for First customers. Priority Pass opens no lounge door in this building. Access rules, hours, and what each lounge is actually like are on the Terminal 8 lounges guide.
Check-in, security and arrivals
American's ticket counters open 2:30 AM to 10:00 PM daily and take no cash or checks, per American's own JFK page, which also lists curbside check-in, self-service kiosks, and a separate Flagship First check-in. Other carriers set their own counter hours; check yours for an overnight departure.
Live wait times run for Terminal 8's general and TSA PreCheck lanes, and the live figure beats any printed one. On timing, only mechanics are published rather than an arrive-by figure: most airlines open check-in 3 to 4 hours before departure and close it 45 to 60 minutes prior, cut-offs vary widely, and your own airline's cut-off is the one that strands people. Arriving from abroad, immigration and customs sit between the gate and the curb; if someone is collecting you, tell them to hold in a free wait lot until you are actually outside.
Practical tips
- Read the gate number before you relax. Gates 31 to 41 run to 12 minutes from security by the terminal's own count, the longest walk in the building. A meal near security and a gate in the 30s do not mix well at boarding time.
- Prebook the Red Lot. From $62 against $74 at the gate, and the booking promises a spot in a garage that now also absorbs Terminal 1's drivers.
- Order food from your phone. The terminal's mobile ordering lets you order and pay on the way to the gate and pick up without the line, which is the practical answer to a tight connection and a long concourse.
- Carrying Priority Pass, aim your expectations at Minute Suites or Gameway. No Priority Pass lounge operates at Terminal 8; the four real lounges are airline-controlled.
- Flying Cathay Pacific or Qatar Airways, check the terminal near departure. Both carry moving-day notes: Cathay Pacific has signed for Terminal 6 and Qatar Airways for the New Terminal One, and the airport's directory is what settles where each checks in on a given day.
