American Airlines terminal at JFK: Terminal 8

The American Airlines terminal at JFK is Terminal 8, and American does not just fly from it, it runs it. That makes it a cleaner answer than JetBlue's, which lands late international arrivals in a second building, and than Delta's, whose partner airlines are split across two: one building for every American departure and arrival, with the ticket counters open from 2:30 AM, gates 1 to 47 behind one security operation, and four lounges upstairs.

Which terminal American uses at JFK

Terminal 8. American Airlines checks in, screens, boards and lands there, and the airport's own airline directory confirmed it on September 7, 2026. American is also the terminal's operator, which is unusual at JFK: the buildings here are run by separate companies and consortia rather than by the Port Authority, so Terminal 8 rules are American's rules in a way that a Delta rule at Terminal 4 is not.

That single answer holds for the whole operation. There is no second American terminal at this airport, no separate international building, and no split between arrivals and departures the way JetBlue has one. If your ticket is flown by American, the answer is Terminal 8 even when another airline sold it to you, which is the case the airport writes its own FAQ about: check the terminal of the operating carrier, not the airline you booked with.

The building was expanded in November 2022 with five extra wide-body gates, which is what made room for British Airways to move in from Terminal 7, and it now runs 60 or more shops and restaurants. The layout, the food and the parking are on the Terminal 8 guide.

Counters, check-in and cut-offs

American publishes both ends of the process for JFK, which Delta's own JFK page does not. The Terminal 8 ticket counters open daily 2:30 AM to 10:00 PM, and American states plainly that the location does not accept cash or checks. A 6:00 AM departure is therefore covered, and a very late arrival wanting to check in for a first-flight-out is not.

The deadlines matter more than the opening hours. To check a bag or check in at the airport you must be there 45min before a flight within the United States and 60min before one to or from anywhere outside it. Online check-in opens 24 hours before departure and closes 45 minutes before, or 90 minutes for an international flight. American's own framing is worth keeping: those are minimums, and earlier is better if you are checking bags or flying internationally.

American lists these as available at JFK: curbside check-in, self-service check-in, Flagship First check-in, Five Star Service, clubs and lounges, TSA PreCheck, mobile boarding passes, priority benefits and TDD services. It does not publish where the Flagship or Five Star desks sit inside Terminal 8, so confirm that with American rather than a third-party floor plan. The airport, separately, shows live wait times for the general and TSA PreCheck lanes on its own Terminal 8 page, and a live figure beats any printed one.

Who else is in the building

14 carriers check in at Terminal 8, so American shares it with 13 others, most of them oneworld partners:

AirlineMove signed
Alaska Airlines None published
British Airways None published
Cathay Pacific Terminal 6
China Southern None published
Finnair None published
GOL Linhas Aéreas None published
Hawaiian Airlines None published
Iberia None published
Japan Airlines None published
LEVEL None published
Qantas None published
Qatar Airways the New Terminal One
Royal Jordanian None published

British Airways is the one people ask about, and it has been here since 2022, co-located with American after the expansion. Older guides still place it at Terminal 7, where it has no lounge and no operation. Japan Airlines made the same kind of move in 2023, from Terminal 1, and both relocations were about putting the transatlantic and transpacific joint ventures under one roof.

2 of the carriers here have signed for a different building and had not moved: Cathay Pacific for Terminal 6, and Qatar Airways for the New Terminal One. Neither move has a published date. Everyone else in the table has announced nothing, which at this airport is the closest thing to stability. The full airline list tracks the same question for every carrier at JFK.

Gates, walks and connections

Terminal 8's gates run 1 to 47 in four blocks, and the terminal publishes its own walk times from security: 2 to 5 minutes to gates 1 to 10, 2 to 4 minutes to gates 12 to 20, 6 to 12 minutes to gates 31 to 41, and 6 to 8 minutes to gates 42 to 47. The 31 to 41 block is the long walk in this building, and it is worth checking your gate before you commit to a meal near the checkpoint. Mobile ordering from the terminal's restaurants exists partly to solve that: you order and pay on the way and collect without queuing.

An American-to-American connection stays inside Terminal 8 and needs no second screening. A connection onto a carrier in another building does: you leave security, ride the AirTrain around the loop, and clear TSA again at the far end. Arriving from abroad, immigration and customs come first, then collecting your checked bag even when it is tagged through, then the baggage recheck facility, then security. Preclearance arrivals skip the border step, and the list is wider than people assume, 15 airports in six countries. The terminal transfer guide puts real timings on all of it.

American publishes two animal relief areas here, and the directions are specific enough to be worth carrying: from baggage claim, leave the terminal near the Travelers Aid desk, cross the roadway, follow the red parking sign and the grassy area is on the right. From the ticket counters, exit through Doorway F, cross the inner roadway to the center island, and it is on the right.

Lounges on an American ticket

Four lounges operate in Terminal 8 and all four open at 4:15 AM, which is early even by hub standards and useful given those 2:30 AM counters. The Admirals Club sits on Concourse C, on the third floor after security across from Gate 42, and runs to 10:30 PM. The three joint American and British Airways lounges are upstairs on the other side: Greenwich above Gate 12 to 1:15 AM, and Soho and Chelsea above Gate 14 to 11:30 PM, with Chelsea the top tier.

American's own wording on getting in is that access to the joint lounges depends on your AAdvantage status, fare class and ticket, with a qualifying ticket on American, British Airways or another oneworld airline. Neither carrier publishes a clean status-by-lounge matrix, so treat any table you find elsewhere with suspicion. One thing is settled and catches people: Priority Pass opens no lounge door at Terminal 8. Its listings here are the Gameway video game lounge and Minute Suites, which are useful and are not lounges. Full access rules are on the Terminal 8 lounges guide.

Getting to Terminal 8

By train, take the AirTrain to the Terminal 8 station, the last terminal stop on the loop coming from Federal Circle. It is free between terminals; the $8.75 fare applies only on entry or exit at Jamaica Station or Howard Beach Station. Terminal 8 is also the one terminal with a city bus stop marked on the airport's own AirTrain route map: the Q3 stops here, running to and from Jamaica. Routes from the city are compared on the trip into Manhattan.

By car, the airport's guidance is the JFK Expressway for Terminals 5, 7 and 8, with the Van Wyck Expressway serving Terminals 1 and 4, and the posted signs beat your GPS while the rebuild keeps re-cutting the approaches. Terminal 8's garage is the Red Lot, the cheapest of the three terminal garages at $4 a half hour, $8 a half hour past three hours, and a 24-hour maximum of $74, or from $62 prebooked. Expect it busy: with the Terminal 1 Green Lot closed, the airport sends Terminal 1's drivers here too. Every rate is on the parking guide.

Practical tips

  • Bring a card, not cash. American states that its JFK ticket counters take neither cash nor checks. That is the kind of rule you discover at the bag drop with a queue behind you.
  • Counters close at 10:00 PM. If you land late on another carrier and plan to check in for an early American departure, you cannot: the counters are shut and reopen at 2:30 AM.
  • Check your gate before you eat. Gates 31 to 41 are 6 to 12 minutes from security by the terminal's own count, the longest walk here. Mobile ordering exists so you can eat on the way rather than near the checkpoint.
  • A 4:15 AM lounge opening is genuinely useful here. All four Terminal 8 lounges open then, which lines up with the early transatlantic bank rather than leaving you at the gate.
  • Do not plan a Priority Pass lounge at Terminal 8. There is not one. The four lounges are airline-controlled, and Priority Pass buys you Minute Suites or Gameway instead.
  • Flying British Airways or Japan Airlines, ignore old guides. Both are at Terminal 8 now, not Terminal 1 or Terminal 7. Cathay Pacific and Qatar Airways are the two here with a future move signed, and neither has happened.

Frequently asked questions

What terminal is American Airlines at JFK?

Terminal 8, and American runs the building as well as flying from it. That is the airport directory's answer, checked on September 7, 2026, and American's own JFK page gives the same one. American has no operation in any other JFK terminal, so a ticket flown by American means Terminal 8 whichever airline sold it to you.

What time do American Airlines counters open at JFK?

American publishes the hours itself: the Terminal 8 ticket counters are open daily from 2:30 AM to 10:00 PM. It also states that the location does not accept cash or checks, so bring a card for bag fees or same-day changes.

Is British Airways at Terminal 7 or Terminal 8 at JFK?

Terminal 8. British Airways moved over from Terminal 7 in 2022, when an expansion added the wide-body gates that made room for it, and no British Airways lounge operates at Terminal 7 today. A guide that still places British Airways at Terminal 7 is several years out of date.

How early should I arrive at JFK for an American flight?

American publishes minimums rather than a recommendation: to check a bag or check in at the airport you must be there 45 minutes before a flight within the United States and 60 minutes before one to or from anywhere else. Online check-in runs from 24 hours out to 45 minutes before departure, or 90 minutes for international. Add the live security wait for Terminal 8.

Which lounges can I use with an American ticket at JFK?

Four operate in Terminal 8 and all open at 4:15 AM: the Admirals Club on Concourse C, and the Greenwich, Soho and Chelsea lounges American runs jointly with British Airways. American describes access to the three joint lounges as depending on your AAdvantage status, fare class and ticket, with a qualifying ticket on American, British Airways or another oneworld airline. Priority Pass opens no lounge door in this building.

Is Japan Airlines still at JFK Terminal 8?

Yes. Japan Airlines moved from Terminal 1 to Terminal 8 in 2023 to sit alongside American and its oneworld partners, and it has announced no move since. It appears on neither the Terminal 6 nor the New Terminal One airline partner list, so Terminal 8 is the settled answer for it.

Does American have a Flagship check-in at JFK?

American lists Flagship First check-in and its Five Star Service as available at JFK, alongside curbside check-in, self-service kiosks and TSA PreCheck. It does not publish where in Terminal 8 those desks sit, so confirm the location with American rather than working from a floor plan you found elsewhere.
